Comares, Malaga guide

One of the highest white villages in the Axarquia, Comares can viewed atop a hillside from miles around. A Moorish village with winding streets and alleyways it sits 685 metres above sea level 25 km inland from Torre del Mar.
It is known as the Balcony of Axarquia and living in Comares offers spectacular views of the mountains and countryside.

Community

Comares is a small village with a population of 1,349 in the 2021 census. Of that population, 40% are ex-pats of various nationalities. However, the village has lost none of its Spanish feel.
Agriculture and tourism are the primary sources of income for the villagers.
There is a small library and school for young pupils. It truly is a traditional hilltop village.

Location

Comares is in the Axarquia to the east of Malaga city in Andalucia. It is reached via a twisting, but wide road, up the hillside.
Malaga airport: 65km, 1 hour
Malaga train and bus stations: 40-65km depending on route; 1 hour
Beach: No, the nearest beach is at Torre del Mar

Health

There is a doctor’s surgery and pharmacy in the village.
The nearest hospital is in Torre del Mar.

Shopping

Shopping is limited in the village, but there is enough for your daily needs with a Coviran supermarket, bakery and tobacconist.
The weekly street market is on Saturday morning.
The larger towns of Colmenar (16km), Vélez-Málaga (24km) and Torre del Mar (25km) have all the shops you may require with the El Ingenio commercial centre in Torre del Mar.

Public Transport

There is a weekday bus from Comares to Malaga run by Alsa, with an early morning departure to the village, and a lunchtime return.

Sports Facilities

For sports fans, the village has a football pitch and municipal swimming pool.
There is excellent hiking in the area.

Annual Events

Comares celebrates its annual feria on the last weekend in August. As with all Spanish towns and villages, there are parades, live music and lots of opportunity to eat, drink and be merry.
They also celebrate the Fiesta de Verdiales, a form of Flameco, in June. The Fiesta de San Hilario de Poitiers is celebrated around the 13th/14th of January and is a sight to behold with the saint’s statue carried through the narrow streets.
