Competa & Sayalonga Area Guide

Competa and Sayalonga are two picturesque white villages located in the Axarquia region in the south of Spain. Sayalonga is a small and charming village nestled between hills covered with olive and almond trees.
Meanwhile, Competa is a larger village, situated on the foothills of Sierra de Almijara Mountains. Both offer stunning panoramic views of the Mediterranean sea and mountains.
Overall, Sayalonga and Competa offer a unique experience of traditional Andalusian life, combined with scenic beauty and a range of exciting activities.


As mountain villages, both Competa and Sayalonga retain a strong Spanish feel. However, Competa, in particular, has an active ex-pat community of northern Europeans in the town.


Malaga airport: 50km, 40 minutes
Malaga train and bus stations: 38km, 40 minutes
Beach: 10km (Sayalonga); 20km (Competa)


Both Competa and Sayalonga have doctor’s surgeries along with pharmacies.
The nearest hospital is in Torre del Mar, around a 30-minute drive.


Both towns have a variety of shops including popular supermarkets such as Mercadona.
The El Ingenio commercal centre in Torre del Mar is around 30 minutes’ drive.
Street markets run on Friday in Sayalonga, and Saturday in Competa.

Public Transport

A municipal minibus service operates between Malaga Bus station and the village of Competa, offering four daily services from Monday to Friday and two on Saturdays, with no service on Sundays. The service is provided by Loymer Grupo of Torre del Mar.
From Sayalonga, there are 3 daily routes available to Malaga. The estimated duration is 1h and 25min and there are stops in other villages such as Algarrobo or Vélez-Málaga.
From Vélez-Málaga, you can catch buses to Malaga or Nerja.

Sports Facilities

Competa has two padel courts, sports hall, tennis and an open-air swimming pool.
Sayalonga has a range of activity centres from yoga, flamenco dancing, Zumba, kayaking and horse-riding.
There is fantastic hiking and cycling in the mountains around the two villages.

Annual Events

Both towns host the usual Easter, Christmas and summer feria events which you’ll find in every town and city of Andalucia.
The Day of the Nispero is held in Sayalonga on the first Sunday in May. The festival was declared of National Tourist Interest in the Axarquia in 1999 and a Festival of Tourist Interest in the province of Malaga in 2005.
In Competa, the town celebrates La Noche del Vino (Night of the Wine) to celebrate the grape harvest on 15th August.

The festival ‘The day if the Nispero’ was declared a festival of National Tourist Interest in the Axarquia in 1999 and a Festival of Tourist Interest in the province of Malaga in 2005.
Sayalonga always celebrates ‘The day of the Nispero’ on the first Sunday in May.
