Viñuela and surrounding villages area guide

The small village Viñuela is located in the province of Malaga, Spain. It is situated at the foot of the Sierra de Tejeda Natural Park and next to the Viñuela reservoir. The village is known for its relaxing atmosphere and beautiful natural surroundings.

Viñuela has a small town centre with narrow winding streets, whitewashed houses, and a small plaza featuring a church. The village is surrounded by hills covered with olive groves, almond trees, and grape vines.
The village also has a few restaurants serving traditional Spanish cuisine, as well as a few shops and small businesses. Viñuela is a great place if you are looking for a peaceful and tranquil second home in Andalusia.

Alcaucin is in a privileged position above the Lake of Viñuela and at the foot of the Sierra de Tejeda and Alhama National Park. It’s 35 minutes to the coast and 55 minutes to Malaga international airport. Across the valley you can see the Zafarraya Pass leading you into the province of Granada.

Community

Viñuela has a strong British expat presence in the village. Alcaucin, meanwhile, is mainly Spanish with a smaller international community.

Location

Viñuela and Alcaucin are inland from the coastline of Torre del Mar, close to the Viñuela reservoir.
On the eastern side of the Costa del Sol, in the area known as Axarquia, they are traditional white villages.
Malaga airport, train and bus station are easily accessible, and connect you with the rest of Spain, Europe and beyond.
Malaga airport: 60km, 50 minutes
Malaga train and bus stations: 48km, 50 minutes
Beach: the nearest beach is at Torre del Mar 17km, 20 minutes

Health

Both Viñuela and Alcaucin have a doctor’s surgery and pharmacies.
The nearest hospital is in Torre del Mar.

Shopping

Both villages have supermarkets and small shops, at which you can get day to day essentials.
The El Ingenio commercial centre in Torre del Mar has the High Street brands under one roof along with smaller boutique shops and a large supermarket stocking international foods.
Street markets are held in Torre del Mar on Thursday, and Caleta de Velez on Saturdays.

Public Transport

Viñuela and Alcaucin are connected to Vélez-Málaga and Torre del Mar via the bus network run by Alsa.
The Torre del Mar station is within the town centre and has direct buses to Malaga, from where you can catch the train or ongoing buses across Spain.

Sports Facilities

Viñuela has a municipal football field, a municipal swimming pool, padel courts and general sports courts. There is also a mini golf course. Los Romanes, which falls under Viñuela town hall, also has sports court, swimming pool and a pétanque court.
Alcaucin has a multi-sports court for tennis, football and basketball. The municipal swimming pool is open in the summer.

Annual Events

Alongside the usual Easter, Christmas and summer feria events which you’ll find in every town and city of Andalucia, Alcaucin and Viñuela have additional annual events.
Chestnut Festival: Every year at the beginning of November, Alcaucin celebrates the chestnut harvest with a festival.
